So often, when we are designing a new piece for direct mail, we forget about the envelope. Failing to consider this vital step can affect your bottom line. For instance, choosing a square envelope will nearly double your postage costs. The post office will consider a square envelope as "odd-sized" and not machinable; this means your postage rates may go up. Another popular trend is to use clear envelopes. These are great when you have an eye-catching design that you want the recipient to see right away and inspire them to open. However, these envelopes are also considered nonmachinable. If you're going to get better postage rates on a clear envelope, you must apply a label that ultimately takes away from the look you are trying to achieve. All too many times, envelopes are a second thought that may negatively affect your overall budget. Make sure to ask questions early about envelopes.
